Your animals will love the immature oat grain that is attached in the head and will benefit greatly from the fiber in the leaf and stem. Oat Hay is a good source of fiber and gives variety to your animal's diet. It also makes a good bedding alternative to wheat straw.

The stage of maturity at harvest determines the development of the seed head. If the hay is harvested at the early bloom stage, the actual oat kernel does not mature. The seed heads only contain the oat husks, which are all fiber.

It is at this early stage that Oxbow's Oat Hay is cut. The result is a light green/tan hay with flaky oat husks at the top. Although there is no actual oat kernel present, the hay smells like oats and small animals and rabbits LOVE this extra treat!

As a high fiber, low protein, low calcium grass hay, Western Timothy is the one most widely recommended by veterinarians for rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas and other herbivores.

Traditionally, farmers harvest two crops annually from each hay field, often referred to as "first cut" and "second cut" timothy. First cutting is harvested in mid-summer, and is a mature, slightly coarse plant. With more stem than leaf, it contains high fiber and low protein levels. When the first crop is harvested, the plants regenerate, much as a lawn does after mowing. The second cutting of timothy takes place in early autumn, and, having had a shorter amount of time for growth, plants tend to be shorter, with less stem and more leaves, producing a soft, fragrant green hay.

Critical Care is a complete "assisted feeding" formula for herbivores that are not eating due to illness or surgery.Whether an animal's lack of appetite is a result of illness, post surgical recovery or pain, Critical Care plays an important nutritional role in the patient's recovery program. Forage based fiber is necessary to encourage proper microbial growth in the digestive system of small herbivores. Timothy grass hay, the main component in Critical Care, provides the proper balance of forage based fiber and soluble carbohydrates needed to support the natural microbial population in the digestive system of small herbivores.

Feeding Instructions

Mix one part dry powder to 1.5 parts warm water. Various methods of administration may require more water to be added. Feed 50cc of mixed product per kilogram of body weight, divided between 4 - 6

feedings per day, to any herbivorous mammal or reptile.

Refrigerate any unused portion after mixing and use within 24 hours. Best results are achieved when small amounts are mixed at the time of each feeding.

*Inappetence is normally a secondary symptom of an underlying health problem. Due to the likely compromised health of animals that are not eating, Critical Care is to be used under the supervision of a veterinarian.

Orchard Grass is a green, fruity-smelling grass hay which many small animals enjoy. To the untrained eye, it looks identical to timothy grass, but the seed heads have a different shape.

Orchard Grass is a perennial cool season grass with flat leaf blades. The leaves vary in color from green to bluish-green depending on the maturity of the plant. The lower surface of the leaf is not shiny; and leaf sheaths can be somewhat rougher to the touch than timothy.

Orchard Grass is recommended by veterinarians for small herbivores due to the nutritional content. Orchard Grass can be mixed with other grass hays when feeding your pet. This is encouraged because animals seem to like the variety. Mixing your grasses will encourage them to eat more hay, which is beneficial to the health of the animal.

Hay is absolutely vital to the health of small herbivores. Orchard Grass also provides a long-strand fiber source that is needed to improve the digestive and intestinal functions by stimulating the digestive system. When animals are fed free-choice hay, it promotes their natural chewing behavior, which helps prevent molar spurs and other dental problems that are so common in these small herbivores.
